Dangerous Jobs Risking Your Life For Your Career - CareerAlley
Dangerous Jobs Risking Your Life For Your Career - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Many people travel to work with a mundane routine in mind. However, there are several dangerous jobs that have a much higher risk of fatality. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported over 5,000 work-related injuries. Most of the work-related deaths occur in a general group of dangerous careers to earn a living. Regardless of the utmost safety measures required in each field, fatalities still occur because of several uncontrollable factors surrounding high-risk careers. source Commercial Fishing The number one most dangerous career since 1992 is fishing. Uncontrollable factors such as weather and malfunctioning equipment result in fishing being the leading profession ending in the highest risk of death among workers. Other factors include long fishing hours with barely any sleep as well as limited medical attention without the assistance of the US Coast Guard. The family of a fisherman that passed on the job does have remedy within the law. The family can be entitled to damages related to the federal maritime law. Furthermore, a family can collect damages based on The Death of the High Seas Act if the commercial fisherman was killed because of the negligence of the employers vessel determined to be non-seaworthy. High seas are defined as 3 nautical miles off the coast. The Death of the High Seas Act provides damages to the family limited to the lost wages that the death of the fisherman caused the family that is typically based on the current earnings and life expectancy of the deceased fisherman. A lawsuit must be brought forth within 3 years of the incident. Photo by Mildly Useful on Unsplash Logging Logging qualifies as another high-risk occupation. Several factors such as high altitude, heavy machinery, and working with large, movable objects all contribute to a high number of deaths. Loggers often work in isolated areas lifting heavy items without medical attention nearby. Loggers have a 27% greater incidence of death within their occupation and 100-150 deaths occur in the logging industry each year. The average salary for loggers is approximately $32,870 per year. The logging industry is strictly regulated by OSHA standards. Any logging death will be fully investigated to ensure that the logging operation abides by all OSHA standards and regulations. Family members of the death of a loved one have a right to make a formal complaint against the logging company and OSHA due to negligence. Monetary reimbursement for lost and future wages is obtainable depending on the outcome of the investigation. Photo by Dominik Vanyi on Unsplash Mining Another dangerous occupation is mining. Mining accidents are quite large and newsworthy due to the massive impact on location as well as multiple fatalities. Adding to the danger of mining is heavy machinery, explosive elements, and enclosed facilities without numerous exits. The fatality rate is approximately 20 per 100,000 workers or 172 per year. The average salary ranges from $37,200 to $89,440. Typically with mining and other hazardous occupations, both large and small companies are required by law to offer the surviving spouse a lifetime annuity. There are stipulations surrounding the amount of the annuity including the time of death. Death before retirement will allow the spouse to receive an annuity if the employee reached a sufficient age and performed enough service for retirement benefits. The annuity will depend on the size of the pension the worker would have received had they opted for early retirement. Again, with other hazardous occupations, there are death benefits in addition to annuities. Both pension plans and death benefits are enforced by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974. More common hazardous occupations include airline pilots, farmers and ranchers, roofers, and truck drivers. Fortunately, there are laws that will assist the family of deceased workers in most cases. 7 Ways to Manage Pre-Interview Nerves - Hire Imaging
7 Ways to Manage Pre-Interview Nerves - Hire Imaging Itâs natural to have some jitters on the day of a job interview. In fact, having some adrenaline pumping through your body on the day youâre interviewed means you want to do your best. The challenge is to keep the adrenaline â" and your nerves, under control. Everyone has his or her own way of holding stress and anxiety at bay. What works for others may not work for you. Here are some tips that have worked for job seekers preparing for interviews; and for those trying to maintain control in other pressure situations. 1. Be prepared. The more diligently you prepare for each interview, the more confidence youâll have on that day. If you can say to yourself before you go into an interview that youâve done as much as you can to do your best in the interview, youâll take some pressure off yourself. The key to preparation is to do more than simply assemble a mishmash of facts about a company. Take in the information, so that you have a clear idea of what the company does and how you fit into the picture. 2. Organize ahead of time. Take 15 minutes or so several days before an interview to decide what youâre going to wear, and make sure that everything is cleaned and pressed. Take care of things like having an umbrella if rain is in the forecast; and having your gas tank full if youâre driving any distance to the interview site. Check your briefcase to make sure that you have extra resumes, a pad of paper, a pen, and appropriate reading material in case you have to wait in the reception area. Make sure that you have detailed instructions for checking in. Find out who you should call if, for some reason, you run into a problem. 3. Get a good nightâs sleep. Though itâs not always easy to wind down before an interview, try. Watch what you eat and drink the evening before the interview. If you have plans that evening or wish to do any final preparations, be ready for bed at a decent hour. Leave the television and your mobile devices off. Put on some soft music. Then, if you canât sleep immediately, youâll at least be resting. 4. Stick to your routine. On the day of your interview, try your best to follow your usual routine. Itâs usually a good idea to wake up at your normal time (or a few minutes earlier). Avoid any foods or beverages that you donât normally eat or drink. And if youâre a coffee drinker, this is not the day to skip your morning caffeine fix. 5. Be aware of your breathing. From the moment you get up in the morning on the day of your interview to the moment you arrive at the interview, pay attention to your breathing. When youâre nervous, your breathing becomes more shallow, which only adds to any anxiety youâre feeling. As soon as you sense that your breathing is becoming more rapid than normal, make a conscious attempt to take deeper, slower breaths. 6. Give yourself extra time for arrival. Find out exactly how to get to the interview site. If youâve never been there before (assuming itâs not a long distance from where you live), take a trial drive to the location a day or two beforehand to pace yourselfâ"ideally at the same time you expect to be on the road as you head for your interview. Even then, give yourself additional time in case you run into extra traffic. 7. Slow down. Make a conscious effort when you wake up on the day of your interview to slow the pace of everything you do. It wonât get you behind (youâre probably behaving more hyper than normal, anyway) and the fact that youâre slowing yourself down physically often sends a message to your brain that helps you relax. And remember to smile! This too encourages relaxation. What are your thoughts on controlling the jitters before an interview? Iâd love to hear from you. Please comment below!

Does a Tailored Resume Make a Difference
Does a Tailored Resume Make a Difference Instead of just sending out a generic resume, todays job candidates need to take the time to tailor their resume to fit every job being applied for. While this may make the application process take longer, it will be well worth the effort in the long run. Here are a few tips to tailor your resume and help make the application process go faster: Keep the information on your resume up to date. Just got a new cell phone? Change the contact information right away. It is easy to forget to change such a small thing, but you shouldnt wait until youre applying for a new job. An out-of-date phone number can have big, negative consequence (such as not being contacted for your dream job). Read the job qualifications and duties carefully. Add the same keywords to your resume so that it will make it through the recruiters software scanner. Use separate resumes for experience in different industries or a functional resume for two or more closely related industries. It makes it easier to add crucial keywords to your resume when tailoring it to a specific position. Learn to be a cut and paste, toggle expert. Not all job application databases will let you upload a resume into different information fields. Become familiar with Control+C and Control+V to copy and paste. PCs use the Alt+Tab keys and Macs use the Apple+Tab keys to toggle between screens. Copy text from your resume first, then toggle to the job application page and paste the text into the information boxes. Name your resumes generically and modify the name each time you upload it to an application database. For example, label your updated resume Edit512 for the industry it addresses and the date you updated it. Do not name your resume with a company name. It is too easy to upload your Xerox resume for an IBM position, and forgetting to change the name will count against you as a job candidate. Following these easy tips will help you to be more prepared for your job search.

4 Ways That Being a New Mom Has Made Me a Better Employee
4 Ways That Being a New Mom Has Made Me a Better Employee Learning youre pregnant for the first time comes with changes and considerations expectant parents never anticipated. But the one thing Tara Kurada didnt have to give a second thought to welches how to navigate coming back to work after maternity leave. When I shared my pregnancy news with my anfhrer, HR and otzu sichs on my team, they were excited and happy for me. The health of my baby and me came before everything else for them, says Kurada, a Supply Chain Systems Analyst who has worked at XPO Logistics for three years.Kuradas boss jumped into action, her coworkers stepped up to cover for her during maternity leave, and Kurada and her husband were free to focus on preparing for the arrival of their daughtera process that was made easier thanks to XPOs generous family-friendly benefits, including paid pre-natal leave, paid bonding leave and schedule flexibility.Ive become more mindful of my actions, more effective at planning and organizing, more detail-oriented and Im multitasking like never before, she shared, adding that work isnt the only area where shes growing. Im just glad that Im getting better at this mom thing, too, which is proven by my daughters smiles. Its all I work so hard for.Recently, Kurada chatted with Fairygodboss about what has helped her navigate her new identity as a working mom, how shes being supported at work post-birth and what her number one piece of advice is for women who are balancing work and family goals themselves. How did you prepare for your maternity leave? When I found out I was pregnant, I thought about (other than praying for a healthy pregnancy and baby) how Id need to be off work on maternity leave to take care of a newborn.I reached out to HR to learn about my available leave and other benefits. Then, I planned my time off work accordingly and conveyed it to my boss. He supported my plans and shared information as necessary to others on my team to organize the wo rk while I was away. Having taken care of all that, my husband and I only had the preparation of our home left for the arrival of our daughter. How long were you on maternity leave and what was it like to return to work?I was on maternity leave for 14 weeks, and I couldnt believe how fast they went by. It wasnt easy to leave my 3-month-old at home and walk out the door to be away for eight hours straight. However, an understanding team of coworkers, supportive boss, considerate HR, a wonderful nanny and, most importantly, my lovely infant daughter made it possible for me to get my work routine together. What type of programs does your company offer to new and expectant mothers?XPO introduced some wonderful pregnancy and family benefits for new and expectant moms and parents in 2019. I had my daughter in January 2019, so I was one of the first employees to use ansicht benefits. XPO now offers 10 days of paid leave while youre pregnant that employees can use for things like doctors visi ts, pregnancy-related prenatal health issues, setting up a nursery, or starting maternity leave early. We also have access to a virtual health clinic called Maven Clinic that new and expectant parents can reach out for pre-natal, pregnancy and post-natal support. Also, I was able to modify my work schedule to better suit my needs while pregnant. Then, we get six-weeks of short-term disability leave after our babies are born, plus abedrngnisher six weeks of fully paid family bonding leave for primary caregivers. After we come back to work, XPO provides accommodations like a Moms Room and breastfeeding space and paid breaks to support your breastfeeding goals. How has your morning routine changed since becoming a mom?My mornings now include a lot of very heartwarming smiles, the sweet scent of my baby and a lot of tea amongst a rush of things like diaper changing, baby bottle making, looking through work email and gathering things to be at work. What kinds of boundaries do you follow to s eparate work and family time?People think of boundaries as a hard stop. But it does not always work out to have fixed boundaries. For me, my goal is that I dont let my family suffer because of work and that I dont let my work suffer because of my family. And XPO supports this by having prearranged work schedules that help me plan and organize work and family goals, as well as flexible work schedules for when things dont go as planned. Why do you think your company is a particularly great place to be a working mom?A baby is a joy for everyone, but a lot of effort goes into raising a healthy and happy baby, particularly in caring for a newborn. New parents need all the help and support, anyway they can get it. Paid parental leave offered by XPO gave me the reassurance I needed that taking care of my baby wouldnt take away from my familys income. After I returned to work, XPO made accommodations so that I could have the time and privacy to pump for my baby. Also, for those times when my daughter was sick or feeling under the weather after her vaccines, I was able to be by her side without missing work, as I was able to work from home. Im grateful for all the benefits that Ive had to for the birth and care of my daughter. What are you especially good at as a mom? What about at work?Im just glad that Im getting better at this mom thing, which is proven by my daughters smiles. Its all I work so hard for. At work, I can say that Im good at tackling changing priorities and analyzing data.Whats your go-to stress-relief activity or routine?I like to sing, a lot. When Im stressed I put my headphones on, start playing my favorite tunes, sing-along and finally turn it into a karaoke session.Whats your number one tip for new moms who are navigating the delicate balance of working and mothering? Ive realized that when a woman becomes a mom, it unleashes this mental strength and physical dexterity from within that she never knew existed in her. For one, as a new mom, Ive become more mindful of my actions, more effective at planning and organizing, more detail-oriented and Im multitasking like never before. It wont be easy, but youll do it. Youll do it the way that works for you, your family and your company, and it may not be the same as another working mom. Plan ahead by researching resources that can support your work and family goals. Talk to your HR. Use any and all benefits that are available to you through work as permitted and needed. Talk to other working moms for advice. Organize but remember that with a baby around, all may not go as planned, so be open to changes in plans. It will seem tough at times, but remember that time will pass. Your baby will not be a baby forever. So savor every moment that you can. Other things can wait for just a second longer.
